English National Opera traces its roots back to 1931 when Lilian Baylis established the Sadler’s Wells Opera Company.
Baylis had been presenting opera concerts and theatre in London since 1898 and was passionate about providing audiences with the best theatre and opera at affordable prices, a belief that remains today at the heart of ENO.
In 1968 Sadler’s Wells Opera relocated from Sadler’s Wells Theatre to the London Coliseum, a theatre designed by Frank Matcham in 1904 for the theatre impresario Oswald Stoll.
Six years after the move to the London Coliseum, the Company was renamed English National Opera.
Today ENO is known for producing ground-breaking staging’s of new and core repertoire and for its exceptionally high musical standards. Taking a fresh inspiring approach to opera to reflect the diversity of our culture.
Included in the ENO 2021/2022 season was Cosi fan Tutte, Mozart’s comic masterpiece, sisters Fiodiligi and Dorabella are enjoying a holiday in Coney Island with their fiances, Ferrando and Guglielmo. In February, the lighting department at the ENO contacted LED Illuminations to discuss their LED lighting requirements. They needed to re-create a 1950’s Coney Island fairground including a Ferris wheel.
We specified our 120LED/m Side Emitting 12V LED ribbon in warm white (3000K). This was used to illuminate the circumference of the wheel. The LEDs are situated on the side of the printed circuit board (PCB) opposed to the normal centre position which allows the light to shine out at right angles from the mounted object.
Gary James, Senior Lighting Technician, ENO wrote afterwards “The LED tape was perfect and worked very well on our production of Cosi Fan Tutte and used the LED tape on a Ferris wheel”.
